Oksana Barshynova, member of the Jury of the II Art History Contest, on Art Criticism

Oksana Barshynova, member of the Jury of the II Art History Contest, curator and Head of the XX-XXI Century Art Department of the National Art Museum of Ukraine, revealed her opinions about the functions and aims of art criticism:

‘To be an art critic entails bearing great responsibility and having great fun. Such responsibility means that one should be able to single out and name the examples of real art out of contemporary environment – which is full of uncertainty and surprises. But this is also what is interesting about it: you are following an artist, discover new senses, coming through the same mass of unconsciousness and doubts. As a result you rediscover art anew again and again and find new and more accurate words to characterise it. I guess that an art critic should not stick to a certain Weltanschauung – his activities are precious because of their dynamics and sensitivity combined with the abilities to see and analyse. Contrary to the slightly academic positions of an art historian or art theorist, art criticism provides the exciting freedom to set one’s own ‘rules of the game’, criteria and means of persuasion.’
